COURSE CURRICULUM

The Photography and Visual Media degree includes a comprehensive range of mandatory modules designed to develop students’ creative, technical, critical, and professional abilities. Documentary, A.I. and Emerging Technologies explores documentary photography, visual research, representation, ethics, authorship, truth, and the changing role of photography. Photography: Environmentalism and Activism examines how photography can address environmental and social issues through location-based creative projects. Histories and Contemporary Legacies investigates photography’s relationship with colonialism, visual culture, and the colonial gaze while encouraging critical analysis of historical and contemporary imagery. Storytelling and the Narrative develops understanding of how narrative and storytelling create meaning within photographic practice. Photographic Techniques provides practical training in professional photography, including studio and location lighting, professional cameras, image production, manipulation, experimentation, and research. Individual Practice allows students to develop their own creative identity and photographic approach, while The Photobook introduces the creation of photography books as a form of visual expression. Collaboration as Practice develops teamwork and collaborative creative methods, and Professional Practice 1 introduces students to professional expectations and career development. Context and Critique: Dissertation Preparation supports research and critical thinking in preparation for the dissertation. Degree Project: Preparation helps students plan and develop their major final project, followed by the Dissertation, which demonstrates independent academic research. Degree Project: Resolution focuses on completing and refining the final body of photographic work, while Professional Practice 2 further develops students’ professional skills and readiness for employment or creative careers. Finally, Degree Project: Exhibition allows students to present their completed work publicly in a professional exhibition environment. Overall, these modules combine practical photography, critical theory, research, experimentation, professional development, and independent creative practice, preparing graduates for careers in photography, visual media, documentary practice, creative industries, and related fields.
