COURSE CURRICULUM
This history degree program offers a comprehensive exploration of British and global history from the early medieval period to the modern day. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules that examine Britain's early medieval context, the transitions from Norman to Tudor society, and the impact of colonial encounters from 1492 to 1779. The course also considers the shaping of British identity between 1603 and 1832 and the transformation of Britain from 1830 to 1985, offering a chronological framework to understand historical continuity and change. In the second year, students undertake a mandatory module in research methods, equipping them with essential historical inquiry skills. They can then choose from a diverse range of optional modules that include themes such as empire from 1600 onwards, gender in British society, the dynamics of total war and democracy between 1900 and 1948, and rural transformations during clearance and famine. Other topics include the Viking Age, Cold War geopolitics, and practical experience through a group project involving work-related learning. In the final year, students are required to complete an independent research dissertation, allowing them to explore a subject of their choice in depth. Additional optional modules provide opportunities to investigate themes such as genocide and historical memory, popular protest in 18th and 19th-century Britain, the cultural and psychological aspects of Viking societies, and the history of witch hunts. Students can also explore modern warfare’s impact on British society or gain hands-on experience with heritage practices. Overall, the program is structured to develop critical thinking, independent research skills, and a deep understanding of Britain’s role in broader historical contexts, enabling students to engage with the past in a nuanced and informed way.
