COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Fine Art at the University of Suffolk is a three-year, full-time degree designed to foster a dynamic creative community, blending practical skills and critical inquiry under the guidance of internationally exhibiting practitioners. In Year 1, students undertake mandatory modules—Materials and Processes, Concepts and Sites, Drawing: Representing and Recording, and Research and Context—establishing foundational skills in artistic techniques, conceptual development, drawing, and contextual studies. These modules encourage interdisciplinary thinking and hands-on exploration. In Year 2, the curriculum advances with mandatory modules Studio Practice, Professional Engagement, and Critical Perspectives, focusing on developing individual artistic practice, professional skills, and critical analysis. Students can also choose optional modules, such as Extended Practice (20 or 40 credits) or Avant-Garde and Experimental Film, allowing customization based on interests. In Year 3, mandatory modules—Degree Project, Research and Dissertation, and Professional Practice 2—culminate in a significant independent project, a research dissertation, and advanced professional preparation, ensuring students are ready for the contemporary art world. The program, supported by dedicated studio spaces, well-equipped facilities (printmaking, woodworking, digital media), and technical staff, fosters creativity and resilience through critiques, study trips, and exhibition opportunities. Graduates emerge with a versatile skill set and a robust portfolio, prepared for diverse careers in visual arts.
