COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Digital Film Production at the University of York is a three-year, full-time degree that combines production, screenwriting, and film theory to prepare students for the competitive film industry. In Year 1, students undertake mandatory modules including Film Studies One: Analysis and Issues (repeated to emphasize foundational analysis), Film Studies Two: Film History, Audio One: Production Sound, Digital Film Production: Introduction Part Two, and Developing Screen Ideas. These modules introduce critical analysis, historical context, sound production, and narrative development, building essential filmmaking skills. In Year 2, the curriculum advances with mandatory modules such as Researching Film: Theories and Methods, Screenwriting: The Ten Minute Short, Avant-garde and Experimental Film, Digital Film Production: Documentary, Digital Film Production: Drama, and Audio Two: Postproduction Sound. These focus on research methodologies, short-form screenwriting, experimental cinema, and practical production in documentary and drama, alongside advanced sound techniques. In Year 3, students complete a Dissertation, Digital Film Production: Final Project, Professional Practice, and Development and Pre-production: Project, emphasizing independent research, a capstone production, professional skills, and project planning. The program’s structure fosters creative, technical, critical, and entrepreneurial skills, ensuring graduates are versatile and industry-ready.
