ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Suffolk is a public university located in Suffolk and Norfolk, England. It was originally established in 2007 as University Campus Suffolk (UCS), a collaborative initiative between the University of East Anglia and the University of Essex. The university gained independence in 2016 when it was awarded university status by the Privy Council, adopting its current name, the University of Suffolk. The main campus is situated in Ipswich, with partner colleges located in Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. As of the 2023/24 academic year, the university has approximately 13,915 students and operates through four academic schools. Its current chancellor is Helen Pankhurst, a scholar, writer, and great-granddaughter of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst. The origins of the university date back to 2003 when Suffolk County Council formed a stakeholder group to explore the creation of a university in the region, which was then the largest county in England without a university. The group included representatives from local government, educational institutions, and development agencies. Substantial financial support from Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk County Council, along with grants from the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the East of England Development Agency, led to the official launch of UCS on August 1, 2007. It welcomed its first cohort of students in September of that year.Initially, UCS did not have degree-awarding powers, so degrees were granted through the University of East Anglia and the University of Essex. In 2009, the former Suffolk College was split into Suffolk New College for further education and UCS for higher education. After receiving its own degree-awarding powers in 2015 and gaining university status in 2016, UCS was renamed the University of Suffolk and began awarding degrees independently.
