COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Work Masters program combines academic study with practical experience to prepare students for professional practice in diverse social care settings. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules such as Theory and Practice, Law and Policy for Social Work, and Human Development in a Family Context, which provide essential knowledge of social work principles, legal frameworks, and human development within family and community contexts. Practical learning is emphasised from the start, with Practice Placement 1 offering hands-on experience in real-world social work environments. In the second year, students continue to develop their professional skills and theoretical understanding with advanced modules, including Critical Approaches to Theory and Practice: Children, Families and Society, Theory and Practice: Health, Illness and Disability, and Theory and Practice: Crime, Welfare and Justice. These modules enable students to work with diverse populations and complex social issues, enhancing their ability to make ethical and informed decisions. Practice Placement 2 provides further applied experience, consolidating learning and preparing students for employment in professional settings. For those completing the MSc, the Social Work Dissertation spans four semesters, allowing students to undertake an in-depth research project that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical insights. Overall, the program equips graduates with the skills, experience, and ethical grounding needed to become competent and compassionate social workers.
