COURSE CURRICULUM

The Masters in Social Statistics and Social Research provides students with advanced training in quantitative and qualitative research methods, preparing them for careers in public, private, and voluntary sectors. In the autumn semester, students develop foundational skills in research design, quantitative data analysis, and social network analysis, alongside an introduction to information technology and library services. The dissertation begins in the autumn and continues through the spring and summer, allowing students to apply their skills to an in-depth research project of their choice. In the spring semester, the program builds on this foundation with modules in advanced quantitative methods, data management, and data visualisation, as well as using big data in social research. Students also have the opportunity to select an option module, exploring topics such as qualitative data analysis, criminology, socio-legal studies, and policy interventions, depending on their research interests. Throughout the year, students gain practical experience using industry-standard statistical and database software, including Stata, R, and Tableau, and work with national and international data resources. The program combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on application, enabling students to design, analyse, and interpret complex datasets, develop evidence-based insights, and address contemporary social and policy challenges with confidence and expertise.
