COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MSc Historical Research program is designed to develop advanced skills in historical inquiry, research methods, and independent study, preparing students for research-based careers or further doctoral study. In the autumn semester, students undertake core modules in research design and quantitative data analysis, providing a strong foundation in rigorous methodological approaches. Alongside these, students engage with historiography and dissertation preparation, gaining essential skills for designing and managing complex research projects. They may also choose optional modules, including social network analysis or other topics agreed with the program director, allowing them to tailor their learning to specific interests. The spring semester builds on this foundation with core training in qualitative data analysis, supplemented by sources and methods for historical research. Students continue to develop research skills through advanced dissertation preparation and can select additional optional modules aligned with their individual research focus. The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application, ensuring students are adept at handling historical data, critically evaluating sources, and constructing well-supported arguments. The year culminates in a 60-credit dissertation during the summer semester, providing an opportunity for students to conduct independent research under expert supervision. By the end of the year, graduates will be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue academic research, cultural heritage roles, or specialist positions requiring historical expertise and analytical rigor.
