COURSE CURRICULUM

The MLitt English Language and Linguistics program is structured to provide students with both core knowledge and the flexibility to pursue specialist interests. In the autumn semester, students begin with a compulsory module in Linguistic Structures, worth 20 credits, which builds a foundation in the key components of language. Alongside this, they choose 40 credits from a range of options such as Historical Linguistics and the History of English, which examines the development of the language over time, Language Policy and Practices in Multilingual Contexts, focusing on the dynamics of language in diverse societies, or Language, Discourse and Society, which explores the role of language in shaping social realities. In the spring semester, students select another 40 credits from options including Language and Cognition, which looks at the interaction between thought and language, Sociolinguistics: Varieties of English, exploring linguistic diversity, or Approaches in Discourse Analysis, which offers methods for studying communication. This semester also includes a compulsory module in Dissertation Preparation and Research Training, ensuring students are well equipped for their final project. In the summer, students complete a 60-credit dissertation, conducting independent research on a chosen topic. This structure allows for both breadth and depth in linguistic study, preparing graduates for research or professional careers.
