COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MRes Media Research program provides comprehensive training in both quantitative and qualitative research methods, preparing students for advanced independent study and applied research projects. In the autumn semester, students complete compulsory modules in research design, quantitative data analysis, and core research methods, equipping them with the foundational skills necessary to conduct rigorous social science and media research. In the spring semester, the focus expands to qualitative data analysis and applied methods, while students also have the opportunity to choose an optional module from a range of media research topics such as the nature of social enquiry, advanced quantitative methods, visual communication design, media regulation and policy, or digital culture for media managers. This combination of compulsory and elective modules ensures a balance between methodological training and exploration of individual research interests. The applied methods module continues into the summer semester, reinforcing practical research skills and enabling students to consolidate their learning. The year culminates with a 60-credit dissertation project, which allows students to undertake an independent research study under academic supervision. This structure provides both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, equipping graduates with the expertise and confidence to pursue a PhD or professional research career in media, cultural industries, or related fields.
