COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes in Historical Research provides a comprehensive program designed to develop advanced research skills and critical understanding of historical inquiry. In the autumn semester, students begin with core modules including Historiography for Masters of Research and Training for Masters in the Arts and Humanities, alongside Quantitative Data Analysis. These modules establish the foundational skills needed to engage with historical scholarship, equipping students to critically evaluate sources, methodologies, and research frameworks. Students also select 20 credits from optional modules tailored to their specific historical interests, allowing them to explore areas of particular relevance to their research ambitions. The autumn semester also introduces HTRPP11, which continues into the spring semester and provides assessed training in historical research methods. In the spring semester, students progress to further core modules, including Sources and Methods for Masters in Research, and Qualitative Data Analysis, which deepen their analytical and methodological expertise. Optional modules are again selected to enhance subject-specific knowledge and research focus. The culmination of the program is the dissertation, a substantial 100-credit project in which students design, execute, and present original historical research under expert supervision. Graduates of this program leave with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue doctoral study, academic careers, or professional roles requiring high-level historical research and analytical abilities.
