COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Educational Research provides a structured and comprehensive pathway for developing advanced research skills in education. In the autumn semester, students build a strong foundation by studying the Nature of Educational Enquiry, Research Design and Process, and Quantitative Data Analysis, alongside beginning work on their dissertation. These modules focus on understanding how to frame research questions, design robust studies, and apply quantitative methods to analyse data effectively. The spring semester develops these skills further, introducing Theory and Methods of Digital Social Research, which examines the use of digital tools in research, and The Nature of Social Enquiry, which explores broader theoretical perspectives on research in the social sciences. Students also study Qualitative Data Analysis, enabling them to apply interpretive methods to complex educational issues. Throughout the year, the dissertation forms a central part of the program, giving students the opportunity to design and carry out a substantial independent research project with support from experienced academic supervisors. The summer semester continues this focus, allowing students to bring together all of their learning and apply it in practice. By completing the course, graduates will be well equipped to pursue careers in educational research, policy, or further doctoral study.
