COURSE CURRICULUM

The MLitt Genders and Sexualities program provides an in-depth study of contemporary gender and sexual issues, combining theoretical knowledge with practical research opportunities. In the autumn semester, students engage with core concepts and debates in gender and sexuality through a dedicated module, alongside foundational training in arts and humanities. Option modules allow students to explore complementary subjects such as international politics or communication and democracy, providing a broader context for understanding gender dynamics. During the spring semester, students focus on representing genders and sexualities, critically examining how identities and social practices are shaped across diverse cultural, political, and social settings. Additional optional modules allow students to study topics including equality, diversity, inclusion, intersectionality, climate change, and social justice issues, while applied research placements may be available for those seeking hands-on experience with non-academic partner organisations. These placements provide opportunities to work on real-world problems, linking theoretical knowledge with practical application. The program culminates in a summer dissertation, where students undertake independent research, synthesising the knowledge and skills developed throughout the year. Graduates are equipped with advanced research capabilities, critical thinking skills, and a deep understanding of gender and sexuality, preparing them for careers in research, policy, advocacy, and other professional fields where gender expertise is valued.
