COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics degree at the University of Stirling provides a comprehensive program that develops both theoretical and practical mathematical skills. In the first year, students begin with core modules in Mathematics I and II, covering foundational concepts, while also choosing optional modules from a broad range of subjects to complement their studies. The second year builds on this foundation with modules in Analysis I and Linear Algebra, along with options such as Optimisation in Theory and Practice or Numerical Analysis, enabling students to explore applied and theoretical areas. Optional modules from other disciplines can also be taken to enhance interdisciplinary skills. In the third year, students select from advanced Level 10 modules, including Experimental Design, Game Theory, Combinatorics, Advanced Real and Complex Analysis, Functional Analysis, Data Science Research, Optimisation, Numerical Analysis, and Mathematical Modelling. Modules are taught on an alternating yearly schedule, providing exposure to a variety of advanced topics. The fourth year focuses on consolidating knowledge through a combination of advanced modules and the Research Portfolio, which serves as a dissertation and allows students to engage in independent research. Overall, the degree emphasizes problem-solving, analytical thinking, and real-world applications of mathematics, preparing graduates for diverse careers in areas such as data analysis, research, finance, computing, and scientific investigation, as well as for further postgraduate study.
