COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marine and Freshwater Biology degree at the University of Stirling provides a comprehensive and practical education in aquatic ecosystems, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. In the first year, students study foundational topics such as Our Blue Planet, Fundamentals for Scientific Inquiry, Cells, and the Human Impact on Aquatic Environments, alongside optional modules that allow exploration of related areas like accounting, computing, and economics. In the second year, the curriculum expands to include Evolution and Genetics, Introduction to Aquatic Environments, Lab Essentials for Physical and Life Sciences, Life in Marine Environments, and Statistical Techniques, providing essential scientific and analytical skills. The third year focuses on the management and conservation of aquatic resources through modules like Managing Living Aquatic Resources, Aquaculture, Changing Oceans, and Statistics Using R, with optional courses in Microbiology, Environmental Policy, and Marine Fieldwork to enhance practical experience. In the final year, students undertake advanced research and specialization with the Marine Biology Research Module, Marine Biology General Module, and the Marine Biology Dissertation, supported by optional modules such as Animal Physiology, Population and Community Ecology, and Sustainable Water Management.
