COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Science degree at the University of Stirling provides a comprehensive foundation in understanding and addressing the planet’s most urgent environmental challenges. In the first year, students build core knowledge through modules such as Building Planet Earth and Landscape Evolution, alongside practical scientific inquiry skills, while choosing from a range of optional modules to broaden their understanding of aquatic systems, ecology, computing, and economics. The second year deepens practical and analytical abilities, including lab skills, fieldwork for sustainable solutions, statistical techniques, and the study of the biosphere, complemented by options in biodiversity, business, and environmental management. In the third year, students focus on environmental policy, management, and geospatial analysis through Geographical Information Systems, while exploring population ecology, soil science, habitat restoration, sustainable water management, plant ecology, biodiversity conservation, and earth observation. The final year emphasizes independent research and practical application, starting with the Honours Project and a choice of specialist modules such as population ecology, conservation placements, and habitat management, culminating in a full dissertation that demonstrates advanced research skills and scientific understanding. Throughout the program, students gain practical experience, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary knowledge, preparing them for careers in environmental consultancy, research, conservation, policy, and management, and enabling them to make meaningful contributions to global sustainability and environmental problem-solving.
