COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Geography and Outdoor Education degree at the University of Stirling provides a comprehensive combination of environmental science, geography, and practical outdoor leadership skills. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through modules in building planet earth, people and the environment, landscape evolution, and global environmental issues, alongside practical outdoor skills such as navigation, mountain skills, and the development and application of outdoor education. In the second year, the focus shifts to biogeography, ecological and evolutionary approaches, outdoor leader training, field skills for sustainable solutions, statistical techniques, and responsibilities and safety in outdoor education, supplemented by options such as biodiversity or diving. The third year deepens expertise with modules in geographical information systems, environmental policy, habitat management, sustainable water management, and sustainable development, while offering practical experience through work placements, field courses, and mountain leader assessment. The final year centers on independent research and professional practice, beginning with the honours project start and progressing to the honours project dissertation. Students also select options such as living soils, glaciers and landscapes, or further outdoor assessments to tailor their learning. Across all four years, the degree emphasizes analytical skills, practical field experience, leadership development, and sustainability, preparing graduates for careers in environmental management, outdoor education, conservation, and related professional fields.
