COURSE CURRICULUM

The Economics degree at Stirling provides a comprehensive understanding of economic theory, data analysis, and real-world applications across business, public policy, and society. In the first year, students build a foundation in economic decision-making, markets, and the wider economy, alongside introductory modules in mathematics, data science, and interdisciplinary options to broaden their perspective. Year two develops intermediate knowledge in microeconomics and macroeconomics, combined with statistical methods for economics, business, and management, while students can also choose optional modules to explore areas such as environmental science, computing, and business. In the third year, the focus shifts to advanced topics, including decision and game theory, causal inference using economic data, growth, inequality, economic instability, and behavioural economics. Students can further specialise through optional modules in environmental economics, industrial organisation, business analytics, leadership, and workplace psychology. In the fourth year, students study economic policy and research methods, preparing for the applied economics dissertation, which develops high-level research and analytical skills. Optional modules allow for deeper exploration of entrepreneurship, responsible business, and contemporary economic issues. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to apply theory to real-world data, develop critical thinking, and acquire practical skills that prepare them for careers in economics, finance, policy analysis, and related fields, equipping graduates with the expertise and adaptability to succeed in diverse professional environments.
