COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Ecology and Conservation course provides a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between organisms and their environment, focusing on biodiversity, ecosystem management, and the impact of human activity. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge with modules in ecology, physiology, cell biology, and scientific inquiry, alongside options exploring the environment and sustainability. The second year develops practical and analytical skills through modules in evolution, genetics, field biology, lab techniques, biodiversity, and statistical methods, equipping students to conduct independent scientific investigations. In the third year, students engage with advanced topics such as environmental policy, plant ecology, biodiversity conservation, microbiology, animal physiology, habitat management, and sustainable water management, while choosing optional modules to tailor their learning. The final year emphasizes research and application, with compulsory modules in population and community ecology, and the start of the honours project, alongside optional modules including field courses, molecular techniques, phylogenetics, and evolutionary biology. The program culminates in a dissertation and honours project, allowing students to design and execute original research in biological and environmental sciences. With a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical field and lab experience, and research opportunities, graduates gain the skills and expertise necessary for careers in conservation, environmental management, ecological research, and related scientific fields.
