COURSE CURRICULUM

The Cell Biology and Applied Biological Sciences degree at the University of Stirling provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary education in the life sciences, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. In the first year, students build a foundation with modules in scientific inquiry, physiology, and cellular biology, alongside optional courses that may include ecology, environmental science, computing, and economics. This combination allows students to develop both breadth and depth in scientific understanding. In the second year, students advance their knowledge through modules on evolution and genetics, laboratory essentials, biodiversity, and statistical techniques, with further opportunities to explore interdisciplinary options such as aquatic environments, data science, and business organization. The third year focuses on more specialized topics, including animal physiology, microbiology, population and community ecology, and managing living aquatic resources, as well as practical experience through applied biological sciences placements and options such as behavioural ecology, plant ecology, and infectious disease. In the final year, students consolidate their expertise in advanced cell biology techniques through modules on molecular techniques, biological control mechanisms, and phylogenetics, bioinformatics, and omics. The course culminates in a substantial dissertation project, allowing students to design and conduct independent research, applying both laboratory and analytical skills, and preparing them for careers in research, biotechnology, healthcare, and related fields or for further study in biological sciences.
