COURSE CURRICULUM

The University of Stirling’s Biology Honours degree provides a comprehensive and flexible program covering the full spectrum of biological sciences. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through compulsory modules such as Ecology: An Introduction, Fundamentals for Scientific Inquiry, Introduction to Physiology, and Cells: The Building Blocks of Life, complemented by optional modules that allow exploration of diverse topics, including computing, economics, and environmental studies. The second year focuses on Evolution and Genetics, Lab Essentials for Physical and Life Sciences, Practical Field Biology, Biodiversity, and Statistical Techniques, along with optional modules for further specialisation, offering hands-on training in laboratory and field-based research. In the third year, students select from a wide range of Honours-level options such as Microbiology, Animal Physiology, Population and Community Ecology, Behavioural Ecology, The Animal Cell, Biodiversity Conservation, Infectious Disease, and Statistics Using R, providing an opportunity to tailor their learning to individual interests and career goals. The fourth year emphasises advanced topics like Biological Control Mechanisms, Phylogenetics, Bioinformatics and Omics, Evolutionary Consequences of Sexual Reproduction, and includes the start and completion of the Biological and Environmental Sciences Honours Project. Throughout the program, students gain practical skills, research experience, and fieldwork expertise, preparing them for careers in biology, conservation, biotechnology, or further postgraduate study.
