COURSE CURRICULUM

The Animal Biology degree at the University of Stirling is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the diversity, function, and conservation of animal life. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through compulsory modules in ecology, physiology, cells, and scientific inquiry, complemented by optional modules that introduce broader scientific and analytical skills. The second year deepens understanding with core modules in evolution and genetics, practical field biology, biodiversity, and statistical techniques, while providing opportunities to explore specialized topics such as aquatic environments or computing. In the third year, students engage in advanced modules including animal physiology, the animal cell, and behavioural ecology, alongside a wide range of options such as microbiology, population and community ecology, environmental policy, habitat management, and conservation studies, allowing for tailored learning based on individual interests. The final year emphasizes research and independent study, with the honours project and dissertation forming the centerpiece of the program, supported by optional modules in biological control mechanisms, phylogenetics, bioinformatics, and field courses. Throughout the course, practical and field-based experiences are integral, equipping students with laboratory techniques, fieldwork skills, and data analysis proficiency. This structure ensures graduates are well-prepared for careers in research, conservation, wildlife management, or further study, with strong analytical and practical expertise in animal biology.
