COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences course at the University of Stirling provides students with an in-depth understanding of cellular, molecular, and ecological aspects of life sciences while equipping them with practical and research skills sought by employers. In the first year, students focus on foundational modules, including animal physiology, microbiology, and key skills such as statistics using R, alongside applied learning through modules like managing living aquatic resources and population and community ecology. Students also study the animal cell and infectious disease, and gain hands-on experience through an applied biological sciences placement, ensuring early exposure to real-world laboratory and field techniques. In the second year, the emphasis shifts to advanced molecular and bioinformatics applications, with modules covering phylogenetics, bioinformatics, molecular techniques, and biological control mechanisms. This stage also prepares students to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory and fieldwork, culminating in a substantial research dissertation in cell biology and applied biological sciences. The program combines research-led teaching with applied learning opportunities, ensuring that students develop analytical, problem-solving, and technical expertise.
