COURSE CURRICULUM

The Spanish and Latin American Studies degree offers a comprehensive pathway to develop advanced language skills alongside cultural and interdisciplinary knowledge. In the first year, students take introductory language modules and Spanish and Latin American Studies courses, combined with a selection of optional modules from other disciplines, allowing for a broad academic foundation. In the second year, students progress to intermediate language study and further Spanish and Latin American Studies modules, while continuing to select optional modules from arts and related programs, which help to broaden perspectives and develop transferable skills. The third year focuses on advanced topics in Spanish and Latin American culture, along with language and intercultural skills for employability. Students follow one of two pathways: the honours pathway includes a semester of study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country, combined with an independent research project, while the ordinary degree pathway allows students to remain in Stirling and take taught modules. In the final year, students further refine their advanced language skills, select from Level 10 modules in Spanish, and have the opportunity to undertake a dissertation or practical translation project. Throughout the degree, students gain in-depth knowledge of Spanish-speaking cultures, enhance their language proficiency, and develop critical and analytical skills, preparing them for a wide range of professional and academic opportunities both domestically and internationally.
