COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology and Social Policy course provides a comprehensive understanding of society, social structures, and the policies designed to address social issues. In the early stages, students are introduced to core concepts in sociology, criminology, and social policy, alongside optional modules in areas such as finance, computing, economics, and environmental studies, allowing for a broad and interdisciplinary foundation. As the course progresses, emphasis is placed on research methods and social theory, equipping students with the analytical skills needed to study complex societal phenomena. Students explore the development of social theory, the causes and consequences of crime, and issues such as race, ethnicity, migration, disability, and inequality, while also gaining practical experience through volunteering opportunities. In the later stages, advanced topics in criminology, social policy, and sociology allow students to examine contemporary issues, including the influence of technology and medicine on society, punishment and justice, the sociology of sport and leisure, and alcohol-related policies. The course culminates in an independent dissertation, where students design and conduct research on a topic of their choice, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical research skills. This structure ensures graduates are well-prepared for careers in social research, public policy, social work, criminal justice, and related fields where an understanding of societal dynamics and evidence-based policy is essential.
