COURSE CURRICULUM

The History program at the University of Stirling provides a comprehensive exploration of both Scottish and global history, combining core modules with a wide range of options to develop research, analytical, and critical thinking skills. Early studies introduce students to major historical periods and themes, including the Renaissance, Reformation, and the making of modern Britain, while exploring concepts of history and thematic transformations. Students also engage with interdisciplinary modules from other fields, such as economics, science, and computing, to broaden their perspective. In subsequent stages, the program emphasizes developing historical research skills, with compulsory modules focusing on reputations in history and applying historical knowledge to heritage work. Students choose from diverse options including literary revolutions, social histories, and international developments, enabling them to tailor their studies to their interests. Advanced years focus on specialized topics such as document history, heritage protection, museums, modern urban history, and the impact of race and society in Britain. Dissertation preparation and a final-year dissertation allow students to undertake independent, in-depth research on topics of their choice, supported by expert supervision. A compulsory special subject on History and Scottish History ensures in-depth knowledge of Scotland’s past, connecting local historical understanding with broader global perspectives and preparing graduates for careers in research, education, heritage, and related fields.
