COURSE CURRICULUM

The Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) degree at the University of Stirling provides an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines three complementary subjects to give students a broad understanding of how societies, economies, and political systems function. In the first year, students build a foundation in politics, philosophy, and economics through core modules such as introductions to politics and philosophy, political concepts and ideas, and economic decision making and markets, alongside optional modules from a range of disciplines. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge with modules on international politics, the history of philosophy from Plato to existentialism, intermediate micro and macroeconomics, and courses on knowledge, mind, and moral theory, allowing them to explore critical ideas and develop analytical skills. The third year offers specialized study, including modules on rationalism and empiricism, time and existence, research methods in politics, decision and game theory, and options across all three disciplines, enabling students to focus on areas of interest while gaining practical research experience. The fourth year emphasizes independent research through the PPE dissertation, requiring integration of at least two disciplines, while students continue to select advanced modules in politics, philosophy, and economics, including topics such as economic policy, global development, leadership, and ethics. The course prepares graduates with critical thinking, analytical, and interdisciplinary skills, ready for diverse careers in policy, business, law, and research.
