COURSE CURRICULUM

The Journalism Studies program at the University of Stirling offers a structured and comprehensive approach to developing practical skills and theoretical knowledge over four years. In the first year, students build a foundation with compulsory modules such as Introduction to Journalism Studies and Ethical Issues in Journalism, while selecting optional modules from a wide range of subjects including accounting, computing, environmental studies, and economics, supporting interdisciplinary learning. The second year focuses on developing core journalistic skills with Writing for Journalists 1 and 2, alongside optional modules that enhance digital literacy, critical thinking, and media understanding through courses such as Introduction to Digital Storytelling and Fact-Checking and Fake News. In the third year, students advance their practical expertise and industry knowledge through compulsory modules in Contemporary Journalism Practice and Law and Government for Journalists, while choosing from options including digital media production, audio-visual skills, media audiences, social media analytics, and gender representation. The final year emphasizes independent research and professional application, with students selecting from advanced modules in applied digital media, audio podcasting, media research, content development, or completing a dissertation or project in journalism. Across all four years, the program combines practical experience, creative production, and critical analysis, ensuring graduates are fully equipped to pursue successful careers in journalism and related media industries.
