COURSE CURRICULUM

The History program at the University of Stirling is structured to provide a progressive and comprehensive understanding of historical study across four years. In the first year, students take compulsory modules such as Renaissance, Reformation, and Revolution in Scotland, and Concepts of History: Themes and Transformations, while also selecting option modules from a wide range of subjects including science, computing, economics, and environmental studies. This allows students to explore interdisciplinary perspectives alongside core historical learning. In the second year, students continue with compulsory modules like Reputations in History and Back to the Future: Putting History and Heritage to Work, while choosing additional option modules from history or other arts programs to broaden their knowledge. The third year focuses on advanced history topics and practical applications, with students selecting options such as documenting the eighteenth century, heritage protection, museum studies, and social and cultural history. Dissertation preparation is a key component for honours students, alongside further option modules covering modern European, American, and Scottish history, as well as museum exhibitions and urban history. In the final year, students undertake a substantial history dissertation and a compulsory special subject in History and Scottish History, enabling them to apply their research skills and specialized knowledge. The program combines foundational study, interdisciplinary learning, and focused research to prepare students for advanced historical scholarship or professional practice.
