COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Heritage program is structured to provide a progressive and flexible learning experience across four years. In the first year, students take compulsory modules such as Renaissance, Reformation and Revolution in Scotland, and Concepts of History: Themes and Transformations, while selecting option modules from a wide range of subjects including science, computing, economics, and environmental studies, allowing for interdisciplinary exploration alongside core historical study. In the second year, compulsory modules like The Key to the Kingdom: The History and Heritage of Stirling and Back to the Future: Putting History and Heritage to Work build on foundational knowledge, while students choose additional options from arts programs or history to expand their perspectives. The third year emphasizes advanced study and practical engagement, with compulsory modules in Heritage Protection and Museum Exhibitions or Dissertation Preparation, alongside a variety of optional modules covering topics such as eighteenth-century documentation, museum studies, modern American and European history, and cultural and social histories. In the final year, students complete a substantial dissertation or heritage portfolio while selecting optional modules that allow further specialization in museum practice, environmental policy, urban history, and cultural studies. Across all years, the program combines rigorous historical study, practical skills development, and interdisciplinary learning to prepare students for professional careers in heritage, museums, research, and related fields.
