COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Studies degree at the University of Stirling provides students with a comprehensive exploration of literature, language, and writing across historical periods and genres, developing critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills. In the first year, students study foundational modules in literary genre and theories while selecting from a range of optional courses to broaden their understanding of other disciplines such as computing, science, economics, and environmental studies. The second year builds on this foundation with modules in literary revolutions, writing and theory, and writing and history, alongside optional courses that allow students to explore complementary subjects and develop interdisciplinary knowledge. In the third year, students have greater flexibility to tailor their studies, choosing from modules covering historical literature, modernism, Renaissance texts, Victorian culture, and the history of the English language, as well as creative writing and other specialized English options. The final year focuses on advanced study, research, and independent scholarship, with preparation for and completion of the English Studies dissertation, allowing students to conduct original research and produce substantial written work. Across the course, students gain practical and theoretical knowledge of literature, language, and writing, developing skills applicable to careers in publishing, education, media, communication, and research, while benefiting from expert teaching and a supportive academic environment.
