COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Education (Secondary) with English degree at the University of Stirling combines in-depth literary study with professional teacher training, preparing students to teach English in secondary schools. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of education, including philosophy, psychology, and politics, alongside literary studies covering genre and theories and approaches, while also choosing from a range of optional modules across other disciplines. The second year builds on these foundations with advanced English modules such as Literary Revolutions, Writing and Language, and Writing and History or Theory, while pedagogical modules focus on the nature of learning, teaching, differentiation, assessment, and progression. Students also gain practical experience through School Experience 1. In the third year, students deepen their literary knowledge through a wide selection of options, including British Literature, Modernism, Renaissance Literature, and Victorian Literature, alongside pedagogical modules such as Differences and Identities and Debates in Subject Teaching, and School Experience 2. The final year emphasizes professional development and research, with compulsory modules including Final Teaching Practice and Developing as a Reflective Practitioner, complemented by an Extended Enquiry into Practice dissertation. Students can also select from advanced English modules, including Creative Writing, Medieval Literature, Language and Linguistics, and other specialized topics, ensuring a comprehensive combination of subject expertise and professional teaching skills.
