COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology and Sociology degree provides a comprehensive exploration of both disciplines across four years, combining core modules with a wide range of options to allow students to tailor their learning. In the first year, students build a foundation with compulsory modules in Introduction to Sociology and Criminology and Applying a Social Policy Lens, alongside optional modules drawn from a broad selection including economics, computing, and the natural sciences. In the second year, the focus shifts to developing analytical and research skills through Using Theory and Methods in Social Research, The Development of Social Theory, and Crime and Criminal Justice, while students continue to select options across various fields to broaden their perspective. The third year deepens research capabilities through Research Process I and II, complemented by honours-level options covering topics such as Criminal Injustice, Crimes of the Powerful, Race, Ethnicity and Migration, Punishment and Society, and Alcohol and Society, with opportunities for volunteering and practical engagement. In the final year, students undertake a substantial dissertation project while selecting honours options to further specialise in areas of interest, such as Criminology in the Age of Medicine and the Machines, Sociology of Sport, and Disability and Society. This structure ensures students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical research experience, preparing them for careers in social research, policy, criminal justice, and related fields.
