COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Social Policy program provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of social issues, crime, and policy responses. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules such as Introduction to Sociology and Criminology and Applying a Social Policy Lens, alongside optional modules from other disciplines including law, psychology, computing, and the environment, allowing a broad perspective on social contexts. In the second year, students develop their research and analytical skills through modules like Using Theory and Methods in Social Research and The Development of Social Theory, while exploring topics such as crime, criminal justice, business, and biodiversity. The third year emphasizes applied research and specialist topics, with Research Process I and II providing structured opportunities for independent investigation, and options covering areas like Criminal Injustice, Crimes of the Powerful, Race, Ethnicity and Migration, and Punishment and Society. Volunteering and survey analysis modules further enhance practical experience and critical understanding of societal issues. In the fourth year, students consolidate their knowledge and skills through a major dissertation project while continuing to select honours options that reflect their interests and career aspirations. Throughout the program, students gain critical thinking, research, and analytical abilities, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, social policy, research, community work, and related fields, equipping them to address complex social challenges.
