COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year, students begin with compulsory modules such as Heritage Protection: Theory and Practice, alongside a range of option modules that allow them to explore topics in heritage, tourism, literature, and history, including courses on museums, eighteenth-century documentation, British and Victorian literature, and cultural studies. Additional options include specialized history modules covering themes such as the United States since the Great Depression, Black history in Britain, nationalism, and oral history methods. In the second semester, students continue with compulsory modules, choosing between museum exhibition design or dissertation preparation depending on their future focus, and selecting further option modules in areas such as modern European history, Scottish history, environmental studies, and museum interpretation. In the second year, students focus on their dissertation or heritage portfolio, selecting 60 credits based on their chosen project. Alongside this, they choose option modules that allow further specialization in museum studies, literature, environmental policy, historical events from World War to the Cold War, urban history, and cultural traditions. Across both years, the program provides a balance of compulsory foundational learning and flexible options that enable students to tailor their studies to individual interests, preparing them for advanced research, professional practice, and careers in heritage, tourism, and related fields.
