ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Stirling, located in Stirling, Scotland, is a public university established in 1967 by royal charter. It was the first new university in Scotland in nearly 400 years, with its campus built on the scenic Airthrey Castle estate in the Central Belt of the country. Spanning approximately 360 acres, the campus lies at the foot of the Ochil Hills and includes the Stirling University Innovation Park and the Dementia Centre. In 2002, the university and the surrounding landscape of the Airthrey Estate were recognized by the International Council on Monuments and Sites as one of the UK's top 20 heritage sites of the 20th century. As of 2022, the university had around 14,000 full-time and part-time students and maintains international degree partnerships in China, Singapore, and Oman. It is also home to the world's only MSc in Human Rights and Diplomacy, offered in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. The first structure on the campus, the Pathfoot Building, opened in 1967 and housed lecture theatres, offices, and an art collection space. Over the years, it expanded to include a Tropical Aquarium and Virology Unit. The building was recognized as a key post-war monument in Scotland. Another major development, the Cottrell Building, began in 1970 and today serves as a central academic hub. The Andrew Miller Building, which houses the University Library and other key facilities, was completed in 1971. The university experienced student protests in 1972 during a visit by Queen Elizabeth II, leading to media coverage and internal investigations. Subsequent developments include the establishment of a business studies department and the Institute of Aquaculture in 1982, as well as construction of the R.G. Bomont Building, the Iris Murdoch Building, and the Colin Bell Building in later years.
