COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Town and Country Planning program is structured over three trimesters to provide a comprehensive understanding of planning theory, practice, and professional development. In Trimester One, students study Planning, Theory and People, which explores the principles and frameworks underpinning town and country planning and the role of planners in shaping communities. Professional Practice develops essential skills for working within planning environments, while Design for Change and Sustainability introduces strategies for sustainable urban development. Spatial Planning and Infrastructure Development focuses on integrating land use, infrastructure, and service provision to support functional and resilient urban environments. Trimester Two expands on these foundations with Planners, Professionalism and Society, examining the ethical, social, and professional responsibilities of planning practitioners. Environmental Impact, Heritage and Society explores the assessment of development proposals, considering ecological, historical, and societal factors. Planning and Policies of Urban Environments examines the regulatory and policy frameworks guiding development, and Plan Making for Place Shaping focuses on translating strategic visions into practical planning documents. Trimester Three is dedicated to the Dissertation, allowing students to undertake independent research, synthesising theoretical knowledge and practical skills to address real-world planning challenges. Graduates leave equipped with critical thinking, professional competencies, and specialised knowledge, ready to pursue careers in local and regional planning authorities, private consultancy, urban development, and policy advisory roles.
