COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Sustainable Buildings program is structured over three trimesters to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of building decarbonisation and sustainable construction practices. In Trimester One, students study Building Retrofitting, exploring methods for improving the energy efficiency and sustainability of existing structures. Building Whole Life Carbon and Cost Analysis introduces techniques to evaluate the environmental and financial impact of building projects, while Sustainable Building Design focuses on creating low carbon, energy-efficient designs for new constructions. Building Modelling and Simulation equips students with the skills to use advanced software tools to model building performance, assess energy use, and optimise sustainability outcomes. Trimester Two builds on this foundation with modules such as Contemporary Issues in Sustainability, providing a broad understanding of environmental challenges and innovative solutions, and Circular Economy in Construction, which explores resource efficiency and sustainable material use. Energy Systems for Buildings and Domestic Energy Monitoring Systems develop technical knowledge of energy generation, distribution, and monitoring within buildings, enabling students to design and evaluate practical low-carbon solutions. Trimester Three is dedicated to the Dissertation, allowing students to undertake an independent research project that synthesises theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and critical analysis to address a specific sustainability challenge. Graduates leave equipped with the expertise to deliver sustainable, energy-efficient, and low-carbon building solutions in professional engineering, consultancy, and project management roles.
