COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Coercive Control and Behaviour is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the psychological mechanisms, development, and impact of coercive and controlling behaviours. In the first year, students study The Aetiology and Psychology of Coercive Control, which examines the underlying causes, psychological processes, and risk factors associated with coercive behaviour across different populations. The Anatomy of Coercive Control in Comparative Contexts explores how such behaviours manifest across varied settings, including domestic relationships, trafficking, gangs, extremist groups, and organisational environments, offering a comparative perspective on patterns and consequences. Psychological Approaches to Recovery from Coercive Control focuses on evidence-based strategies and interventions that support individuals and families in coping with and recovering from coercive experiences, integrating therapeutic, social, and organisational approaches. Building a Research Evidence Base for the Psychology of Coercive Control equips students with advanced research skills, enabling them to critically appraise existing literature, design studies, and contribute to evidence-informed practice. The Dissertation provides an opportunity for independent research, allowing students to investigate a specific area within coercive control, applying theoretical knowledge and research methods to generate new insights. Together, these modules prepare graduates for careers in psychology, social work, law enforcement, safeguarding, and related fields, while also laying a strong foundation for doctoral research and advanced practice in understanding and addressing coercive and controlling behaviours.
