COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Midwifery program offers a comprehensive and structured approach to developing advanced midwifery practice, with a strong focus on clinical expertise, leadership, research, and education. In trimester one, students engage with modules such as Critically Exploring Professional Practice, Research Methods, and Perinatal Mental Health, alongside Professional Advocacy and Newborn and Infant Examination (NIPE), allowing them to gain essential knowledge in both theory and practical skills. Additional modules, including Independent Learning Midwifery, Third Trimester Ultrasound, Non-Medical Prescribing, Project Management, and Dissertation work, provide opportunities for developing autonomy, professional judgment, and research capabilities. Trimester two builds on these foundations, offering advanced learning in Evidence-based Care for Normal Birth, Emergency and Intensive Care of the Newborn, and Care of the Compromised Baby. Students continue to consolidate their skills in NIPE, Non-Medical Prescribing, Critically Exploring Professional Practice, and Perinatal Mental Health, while maintaining a focus on research through online Research Methods and advancing their project work. Trimester three emphasizes specialized and high-level practice through Professional Advocacy, Maternal Critical Care, and Independent Learning Midwifery, alongside continued research engagement. Across all trimesters, the program ensures midwives develop clinical proficiency, critical thinking, leadership, and research skills, preparing them for diverse roles in healthcare, education, and policy-making, and enabling them to make a substantial impact on maternal and neonatal care.
