COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Social Work program is structured over two years to provide a comprehensive foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for professional social work practice. In Year One, students begin with Skills for Social Work Practice, developing core competencies in communication, assessment, and intervention techniques. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion explores social justice principles and the importance of promoting fairness and respect within professional practice. Contexts for Social Work Practice examines the diverse social, cultural, and organisational environments in which social work takes place, while Theories and Interventions introduces key psychological, sociological, and social work models to inform practice strategies. Professional Capabilities in Practice 1 allows students to apply these concepts in supervised practice settings, enhancing their professional skills and reflective abilities. In Year Two, students progress to Decision-making in Social Work, developing the critical thinking and ethical reasoning required to make informed, responsible professional judgments. Social Work Law and Policy for Practice provides an understanding of the legal and policy frameworks guiding social work interventions. Understanding Research in Practice equips students to apply evidence-based approaches, and Professional Capabilities in Practice 2 offers advanced applied learning in real-world settings. Across both years, the program integrates academic study with practical experience, preparing graduates to qualify as professional social workers and pursue careers in social care, policy, advocacy, and research, with the skills to make a meaningful impact on individuals and communities.
