COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Visual Communication program is structured over three semesters to provide a comprehensive and practical learning experience, combining theoretical knowledge with real-world application. In Semester One, students engage with Creative Research Methods, which introduces essential research techniques and methodologies relevant to visual communication practice, enabling them to explore, analyse, and respond to design challenges effectively. Exploring Theory and Practice complements this by providing a critical understanding of key concepts, historical and contemporary approaches, and the broader cultural, social, and professional contexts in which visual communication operates. Semester Two focuses on Real World Context and Applied Practice, giving students the opportunity to work on live projects with cultural organisations, businesses, and community partners. This hands-on experience allows students to develop practical skills, professional competencies, and a portfolio of work that reflects industry expectations. It also encourages collaboration, problem-solving, and creative innovation in applied settings. Semester Three is dedicated to Definitive Practice, where students undertake an independent, self-initiated project that synthesises their learning, research, and practical skills into a cohesive final body of work. By the end of the program, graduates are equipped with the critical, creative, and professional expertise necessary to pursue careers in visual communication, creative industries, digital media, and related fields, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary practice and professional readiness.
