COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Photography and Socially Engaged Practice program is structured over three semesters to develop both the theoretical understanding and practical skills necessary for socially engaged photography. In Semester One, students study Creative Research Methods, learning to design, conduct, and analyse research that informs their artistic practice, while Exploring Theory and Practice introduces key concepts, debates, and frameworks surrounding socially engaged arts, helping students understand the cultural, ethical, and societal impact of their work. Semester Two focuses on Developing Socially Engaged Photography Practice, where students apply their learning to create collaborative projects that respond to community needs and priorities, integrating creative, ethical, and professional considerations. Real World Context provides hands-on experience working with community partners and commissioners across health, youth, community, and justice sectors, allowing students to navigate practical challenges, develop collaborative approaches, and critically reflect on the social and cultural impact of their projects. In Semester Three, Definitive Practice allows students to complete an independent, substantial project that synthesises research, theory, and practical experience, showcasing their artistic vision and professional capabilities. Throughout the program, students receive support in professional development, safeguarding, ethical frameworks, and sector networking, preparing them to work as photographers, creative producers, or socially engaged arts practitioners. Graduates leave equipped to deliver impactful, ethical, and critically informed photographic projects that engage communities and contribute to meaningful cultural dialogue.
