COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Socially Engaged Arts program is structured over three semesters to provide a comprehensive blend of theoretical understanding, practical experience, and creative application. In Semester One, students study Creative Research Methods, developing skills in research design, critical analysis, and reflective practice that support informed artistic decision-making. Exploring Theory and Practice introduces key concepts, frameworks, and debates within socially engaged arts, enabling students to understand the role of art in addressing social issues and fostering community participation. Semester Two focuses on Real World Context, allowing students to engage with communities, stakeholders, and social environments to apply their learning in authentic, practical settings. Applied Practice further develops hands-on experience, supporting students to design, implement, and evaluate collaborative art projects that respond to pressing social challenges, such as inclusion, mental health, homelessness, and sustainability. In Semester Three, students complete Definitive Practice, an independent project that synthesises their research, theory, and practical experience into a coherent, professionally relevant body of work. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to critically reflect on their practice, navigate complex social dynamics, and communicate effectively with diverse audiences. Graduates leave equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to contribute meaningfully to socially engaged arts, community projects, and wider cultural initiatives, using creative practice to foster dialogue, participation, and positive social impact.
