COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Intelligence and Security Studies program is structured across three semesters, combining theoretical knowledge, historical context, and practical research skills to prepare students for careers in intelligence, security, and related fields. In the first semester, students study Issues in Intelligence, which introduces the core concepts, challenges, and debates within the field, alongside Intelligence and Conflict, examining how intelligence functions during periods of political and military tension. The second semester explores specialised topics, beginning with The Secret State, which provides insight into the structures, operations, and influence of intelligence agencies. Middle East and Terrorism focuses on the political, social, and historical factors contributing to regional security threats, while Strategic Studies examines the development and application of security policy and military strategy. Contemporary Security, Intelligence and Terrorism Studies evaluates current issues, trends, and responses within global intelligence and security environments, combining historical knowledge with modern perspectives. The final semester is dedicated to the Dissertation, allowing students to undertake independent research on a topic of their choice, integrating theoretical frameworks, empirical analysis, and critical evaluation. This structure ensures that graduates develop a strong understanding of intelligence and security issues, the historical and cultural contexts in which they operate, and the analytical and research skills necessary to contribute effectively to policy development, security practice, and academic study.
