COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Documentary Filmmaking program is structured around a series of core modules designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for a career in documentary production. Media Theory and Practice introduces students to key concepts, frameworks, and critical perspectives within the media industry, enabling them to understand and analyze contemporary documentary forms. Creative Development Projects encourage experimentation and innovation, allowing students to develop original ideas and translate them into compelling film content. Collaborative Projects focus on teamwork and interdisciplinary cooperation, reflecting real-world production environments and emphasizing communication, leadership, and project management skills. Advanced Production Practices and Production Craft provide in-depth, hands-on training in the technical and creative aspects of filmmaking, covering areas such as camera operation, editing, sound, lighting, and post-production workflows. These modules ensure that students gain the practical expertise required to produce high-quality documentary content. The program culminates in the Major Project, where students can choose between a Practice Research Project or a Dissertation, allowing them to pursue an independent, substantial body of work that integrates their learning and showcases their personal vision and professional capabilities. Together, these modules equip graduates with the critical, creative, and technical skills needed to succeed in the competitive and evolving field of documentary filmmaking.
