COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Zoology with Infectious Diseases degree provides a comprehensive foundation in animal biology, ecology, and the study of parasites and infectious diseases. In the first year, students gain an understanding of biodiversity, global wildlife distribution, genes to ecosystems, and essential biological and study skills, alongside practical laboratory-based learning. The second year builds on this foundation, introducing parasitology, infectious disease biology, animal physiology, data science, and research skills, while offering options in ecology, animal evolution, and wildlife behavioural studies. This combination of theoretical and practical learning equips students with the analytical and technical skills needed to investigate biological systems and the impact of diseases on animal populations. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics including the biology of parasites, veterinary and zoonotic infectious diseases, and complete a substantial research project with an emphasis on professional skills or science communication. Optional modules allow for further specialization in areas such as fisheries science, tropical ecology, animal cognition, applied freshwater biology, and conservation of birds and wildlife, giving students flexibility to tailor their studies to their interests. Through fieldwork, laboratory research, and data-driven investigation, graduates develop the knowledge and practical expertise required for careers in zoology, wildlife conservation, veterinary science, epidemiology, or postgraduate study in related disciplines.
