COURSE CURRICULUM

The Policing degree at Salford is structured to provide students with a thorough understanding of the role and responsibilities of police officers while equipping them with practical and academic skills essential for a career in law enforcement and the broader criminal justice sector. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules covering vulnerability and risk, the practice of policing, criminal justice and human rights, contemporary policing issues, and academic skills. This initial stage focuses on understanding the social, legal, and ethical contexts of policing and the skills required to operate effectively. In the second year, the course advances to explore safeguarding, operational policing challenges, internet risk and security, and community-focused policing, alongside research methods that strengthen analytical and problem-solving abilities. Students gain insight into complex policing scenarios and learn to evaluate and respond to emerging issues within the criminal justice system. The third year emphasizes applied learning, with a dissertation, modules on complex investigations and the politics of policing, and a community placement providing hands-on experience. Across the program, students develop practical competencies, critical thinking, and research skills that prepare them for professional roles in policing, public protection, and related areas, while fostering the knowledge and confidence required to navigate the dynamic challenges of modern law enforcement.
