COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Marine Biology degree offers an in-depth exploration of the marine environment, providing students with a solid foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of the discipline. In the first year, students are introduced to core topics such as the principles of marine biology, biodiversity, and the global distribution of wildlife, alongside essential skills in biology and academic study techniques. Year two expands on this foundation with modules focusing on ocean challenges, marine and wildlife evolution, conservation biology, coastal management, research skills, and data science, equipping students with the knowledge and tools to analyse complex environmental issues. The final year emphasises applied learning and specialised study, including fisheries science, marine biotechnology, and applied aquatic biology. Students also undertake a final year project, with options to develop science communication and professional skills, or enhance practical expertise in areas such as environmental geographical information systems, diving for marine conservation, or mitigating climate change. Practical fieldwork, laboratory experience, and data analysis are integrated throughout the program to ensure graduates develop hands-on skills alongside theoretical understanding. By combining scientific knowledge, technical competence, and real-world application, the course prepares students for careers in marine research, conservation, environmental consultancy, and other marine-related industries, fostering both professional readiness and environmental stewardship.
