COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology degree provides a comprehensive understanding of crime, justice, and social inequality through an exploration of theory, research, and real-world issues. In the first year, students are introduced to key concepts and debates in modules such as Understanding Criminology, Culture, Power and Deviance, and Criminal Justice and Human Rights. They also examine social change and inequality through Contemporary Challenges in Crime and Society and Social Justice in Action, developing foundational analytical and critical thinking skills. The second year deepens theoretical and research knowledge through Globalisation, Society and Crime, Theoretical Criminology, and two research-focused modules—Research Problems and Methods: Making it Count and Qualitatively Better. Optional modules such as Environmental Justice, Critical Victimology, and Internet, Risk and Security allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests or replace one option with a language module. In the final year, students undertake a Dissertation and Work: Practice and Reflection, applying theory and research to professional and academic contexts. A wide range of optional modules, including Prisons and Punishment, Gender, Crime and Criminal Justice, Digital Society, and Critical Approaches to Terrorism, encourage specialization and critical engagement with global and contemporary issues. The course prepares graduates for careers in criminology, justice, research, and social policy.
